When taking a photo, instead of the standard lens operation – extending, opening and closing the shutter, and retracting – the lens may extend and fail to open the shutter or return to the starting position on its own. Often, it requires pressing the shutter release again to return the lens to its neutral position. It may even require pressing the shutter release to extend the lens to the neutral position when the camera is turned on.
This is a sign of communication issues between the camera and the lens. There are two possible causes: a damaged lens position sensor or a broken flex tape responsible for communication between the camera and the shutter.
The repair involves replacing the flex tape with a new one produced by us or replacing the position sensor with an NOS (New Old Stock – an original replacement part purchased from old authorized Kyocera service stock), depending on the cause of the malfunction. Since the amount of work is similar in both cases, the repair cost is the same. It is rare for both malfunctions to occur at once. In such cases, we simply add the additional cost of the part to the base repair price.
If the flex tape in your device has not yet broken, it is not worth waiting for that to happen. Even in "new" devices (meaning equally old but unused), due to their age, the tapes become fragile and are prone to sudden damage. We encourage you to carry out the replacement as a precaution.
